The Grapes of Wrath #15
The Joad family did a very brave thing by moving west to California. It was brave because they had no family out there and they had no way of knowing for certian that they would be garentied work. Pa Joad saw an article advertising work out in California. It said that 800 people were needed. A friendly neighbor made a good point when he said that the farmer who owns the farm propbably printed 5,000 sheets and 20,000 people show up. So then the farmer only takes the first 800 workers not the other how ever many are left. He just slames the door in their face and tells them to go somewhere else. The Joad family is a big family I think there was about fourteen people that were on the journey west to California. It was a big challange to be able to move all of the family togehter in one vehicle. Some of the family rode on top of the car. This is crazy. The cars do not go very fast. They are going about fourty five miles per hour. That was fast for that time of the history of America and they had to hold on because there was not enough seats for them in the car. They also had to be able to hold all of their stuff in the car. The family left with about 150 dollars. This was no fortune, but it was enough to get them to California and to find work and get more money. Pa sold all the appliances in the house. There was good things and bad things about a family this big. A good thing was that all of the people could work. That means that more money is coming in. A bad thing is that it is a lot of mouths to feed. Ma Joad did a great job with feeding her family and staying strong for her family. The Joads did a brave thing by traveling west. It probably was not the smartest, but it was the bravest.
