John Steinveck wrote a novel that is very different than most novels. His novel follows the story of the Joad family heading west to California in search for a new life away from the banker and the renters. During the course of his novel, Steinbeck intercedes the story of the Joads with stories of random family also on a journey west. These stories of the families are usually going through the same situations the Joads are going through. It shows the hard times that all the families went through, not just the Joads. There is also stories aobut the country and the road the Joads are traveling on. John Steinbecks creative way to write this story confused me at first, but once i got used to it, it was kinda neat. Also the language that Steinbeck used was really confusing and toke awhile to get used to. All the people talked like they never went to school. They pronounced the words uncomplete and used the wrong tense.
I liked the book. At the begining, I thought this book would be pointless, but as I got into the book, I was not able to but the book down. The characters drew me in. I was amazed by Ma Joad and how she was able to put her feelings aside and care about her family more than herself. Also the hard times the family had to go through really drew me in. It was incredibly sad that these event would actually happen to a family back then. The little things that happened to families were hard, but they kept going. The end of the novel is very disturbing to me. I thought is was weird that Rose of Sharon brest fed the man so he could live. It is also kind of inspiring that the people all help eachother out. This is a book that I would only recomend to people who like to read about the history of our nation.

The Grapes of Wrath #9
According to dictionary.com, wrath means "strong, stern, or fierce anger; deeply resentful indignation; ire." To be in wrath with something is to not like it, or to be angered at it. The Grapes of Wrath is a great title for this novel. John Steinbeck, the author, wrote a touching novel about a family that believes that they will be able to travel to California and find work. The Joad family lived and raised their kids on the farm. Pa Joad could not pay the rent and the bank started to take their land and the Joads could not afford to live on the land any more. The Joads were inspired to leave their home because they saw a flier that wanted 800 people to go there and the pick grapes at their farm. The family believed that they were needed there and they packed up their things and headed west. Granpa said that when he gets there he is going to fill his mouth with grapes and let the juice run down his face. This is an illusion that many people who were going to California had. They thought that when they get to California they will be promised work and have all the fruit they want. They were wrong. When they got there, there was no work and the Joad family had no money or a place to stay.
The title The Grapes of Wrath is a good title because it tells the truth about the migration west in search of work. The grape part fits in because they thought they woul dhave work picking grapes and other fruit. The wrath part fist in because they were in wrath because they were being lied to. When the title is put together, The Grapes of Wrath, is genius because the family is mad they did not have any grapes to pick or to eat. It could not have been titled Peaches of Wrath because they did get to pick peaches and they did eat the peaches. The youngest Joad ate too many peaches and he got sick. The family could not stay long at the peach farm because soon all the peaches were picked. The title is a great title for this novel, and John Steinbeck is a great writer.

The Grapes of Wrath #8
There is many things to learn from John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath. One thing is to believe in your family and have courage. The Joad family believes that when they get to Calfornia, they will have a life of wealth and food and money. If they did not have the courage to leave everything that they know behind, they would never have left. I think it was a good choice for them to leave. I do because there was nothing they could have done when their land is being taken by the banks. Another thing to learn is to never give up. The Joad family does not give up through all the horrible things happening to them. Ma Joad is the toughest person in the novel. She is the one thing that keeps her family alive and moving. She losses her son because he leaves the family, she watches the Granparents die, and she has to help he daughter give birth to a stillborn. These hardships are not for the faint hearted. Ma keeps on going strong and keeps moving for her family.
The tone in the begining of the novel is skeptic, but happy. The Joad family is worried that nothing will be waiting for them in California, but they know that it is the right choice for their family and they are happy for a chance at a new life. During the course of the novel, the tone and the moods start to dwindle. The people are hungry, they are running out of money, and they can not find work. The tone get sadder and sadder as the people are dying and running away. They do not have a lot of hope left and feel like there is nothing left for them to do with winter coming and they have no food.
The imagery in the novel is dull. John Steinbeck has good discriptions on the people, but he is not good at discribing the features of the land and the surroundings.
Steinbeck does have a lot of lessons in his novel. The tone in the book changes throughout the book and the imagery is nothing exciting.

The Grapes of Wrath #7
There are many symbols in the novel The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck. The story is about a family traveling to California in search for work and money because they can not afford to work and live on their farm. The main reason they can not stay on the farm is because of the Dust Bowl. The Dust Bowl is where is the little rain and there is huge storms with dust. With the dust, the crops can not grow because they have little water and sun. The dust sybols the end of their life on the farm and the need to move on. Also on the trip, the Granparents pass away. This symbols that they can not go back to their old life because it is not there anymore. I mean by this because the Granparents represent the past and they are not alive anymore so the farm is also dead and in the past. There in one thing that gives the familes hope. The daughter is pregnant. Her baby represents the hope for a new life. During the trip her husband, Connie leaves her. This shows that the baby will have a life of hardships ahead of it because it was born into sorrow. The day before the baby is born its mother, Rose of Sharon, worked in the cotton field. This shows that the baby will have to work hard in its life. When the baby it born, it was not alive. This symbols the loss of hope the family has. The baby would not have been able to live much of a good life if he was alive. The family belileves when they get to Calfornia they will get to eat the fruit and they will be nuorished with the fruit. This symbols the lack of knowledge the family has about the place they are going. When the family does find work at a peach farm, Winfield, the youngest child, does eat a ton of peaches and he gets sick. This represents that the family was wrong about everything they thought California would be.
The Grapes of Wrath #6
Tom Joad just got out of prison for killing a guy. He was in a bar and a guy pulled a knife on him, so Tom picked up a shovel and he beat him in the head until the man died. He went to McAlester. McAlester is a jail in Oklahoma. He was supposed to be in the jail for seven years, but since it was not his fault completely that he killed the guy he was able to get out in four years. The jail fed the men regularly, told them what to do, and gave them a bed to sleep in. When Tom left, he did not know what time to get up and he went hungry a lot. When he was out of jail, he was on parole. With his parole, he needs to check into the jail every once in awhile and he can not cross the state line. He caught a ride with a trucker to take him to his house. On the way, he met the precher, Casy. Cast went the rest of the way to the Joah farm with Tom. When Tom arrived at the farm, his family was really happy to see him. They told Tom that they were traveling west in search for work. They could not afford to run the farm anymore with the bank always taking their money. For Tom to stay out of jail, he must not cause any trouble with the law. If he starts any brawls with the cops, they will see that he is outside his parole and send him back to McAlester. Tom travels outside his parole to be with his family. We was away from his family for over four years and he does not want to leave them again so he ignores his parole. Tom can not stay away from trouble and he gets into a fight with a cop. Casy toke the blame for Tom and he went to jail. Tom was able to get away. Later while the family was in a camp Tm went outside the camp to see what all the comotion was about. The workers at the camp were on strike and Casy was the one leading it. The cops came and Tom got into another fight and he thought he killed yet another man. Casy also died that night. Tom went back to his family, but he could not work because his face was all bruised up. The family left and went to another camp. Tom hid out in the forest while his family worked. His little sister got in a little fight and told another girl about Tom. Tom had to leave his family. I think most of Tom's actions are ruled by his pride. He is a very prideful person and does not want to be wrong.
The Grapes of Wrath #5
There is many different types of people in the novel The Grapes of Wrath. Most of the people are on their way to California because they can not afford to farm their land. They can not farm their land because they can not afford the tractors to plow and the bank does not want to wait for the crops and they want a lot of crop. The families travel out west in search for work. They see a flier that says there is work out west, they trust it, so they pack up their family and sell their belongings. The novel is mostly about the Joad family. The Joad family is traveling with thirteen people and they need a lot of food to fed all of the family. The families on the journey all help eachother out. They all understand what every other family is going through the same hardships. They offer food to the other families when it is avaible and they help the families. When the Granpa was dying, another family, the Wilson's offered the Joad's their tent for the old man to go in while he was having a storke. The families are all nice and helpful to eachother. The Joads are from Okalohoma and some of the families think that the "Okies" are rude and selfish people. These types of people ignored the Joads or they critized them.
The camps that the traverlers stayed in were made by themselves. Most of the times they just stopped on the side of the road and pitched their tents. The Joad's tent was made from a tarp. They also had beds that they brought and they slept on. There was one camp that the family heard aabout. It was a government camp in California. The camp did not allow cops to come in, they had running, hot water, they had commities to keep the camp in order, and they had dances every Saturday night. This was the Joad's favorite camp they were able to work for their rent. They soon ran out of money for food because there was no work around the area and they had to leave. They people on the journey all depended upon eachother and the camps were somewhere that the Joads could feel a little safe while on the road.

The Grapes of Wrath #4
The novel, The Grapes of Wrath, written by John Steinbeck, was written in the 1930's. This was a time when cars were a new thing. There were all different types of cars. There was Ford, Cheavy, Buick, Cadillac, and many more. The Joad family drove a Hudson Super Six. The car was a popular car between 1910 and 1920. These cars were not made very well and they broke down a lot. The Joad family had a son named Al. Al likes to fix cars. He wanted to work in a garage somewhere and fix them. He always fixed the car when it broke down. Gas back then was also cheap, for us. The novel said it was about fifteen cents per gallon. I do not know what kind of gas milage that the cars got. The cars made traveling a ton easier. An average car could travel about forty five miles an hour. These helps to cut the travel time in half. Cars are expensive. Nice cars could cost anywhere between a thousand to two thousand dollars. Cheap ones could be bought for about two hundred and fifty dollars. These are very efficiant ways to travel. The Joads packed all their belongings into the car along with all thirteen people in the car also. It was also convient for the travelers because they could travel at their own pace and they can pack as much as they need. The only bad part is paying for gas and all the breakdowns the cars have.
Another big thing in this time period is the television, radio, parlor games, and electronics. FM radio was a big invention because it allows the people to listen to broadcasts and to baseball games and many more important things. The Joad family was not fortunate to be able to have these luxeries. They probably did not know about these inventions too much and they probably wished they had one, just like all unfortnunate people do when they have what they can not have. This time period really shaped the way our country to how it is today.

The Grapes of Wrath #3
The ending of The Grapes of Wrath is disturbing. After the family leaves the government camp, they head toward a place where they heard that a lot of people were needed. This job was picking peaches. The family got five cents per bucket of peaches. The family was starving and the earned one dollar in that day. Ma bought meat and bread and not a lot of things for the family. They were in this camp that was for the workers. Earlier in the book, Tom got in a fight with a cop, and since he was on parole, Casy toke the blame and was takin to jail. Outside the camp there was a strike goin one. Tom went out to see what the fuss was and he saw Casy there. Casy got out of jail and was working at the planitiation. He was leading the strike because they were getting paid two and a half cents. The cops came and Tom got into another brawl with the cops and he thought that he killed another man. His face was messed up so he could not work in the field. His Ma decided that they should leave and go to another place. They went to a cotton field. Ruthie, Tom's younger sister, had a Cracker Jack and she wouldn't share it with the other kids and she told the other girl that her brother killed two guys before and he will kill her brother also. Ma found out and she made Tom leave. Meanwhile, Ruth of Sharon is getting ready to have her baby. She goes through labor and she has a stillborn. Ruth of Sharon is sleeping while Uncle John sends the baby off into the river. It rains for six days and the family goes into a barn to get dry. In the barn, there is a father and a son there. The father has not eaten for six days because he gave all his food to his son. Ruth of Sharon helps the dying man by brestfeeding him with her left over milk. Then the book ends with that. It was weird.
The Grapes of Wrath #2
In the middle part of The Grapes of Wrath, the Joad family has stopped by at a roadside camp to sleep and eat for the night. During their stay at the camp, the family meets the Wilsons. The Wilsons are a family that is heading west also in search for a new and hopeful life. Granpa has a stroke in the night and he passes away. He died in the Wilson's tent. The men burry Granpa. The Joad family travels with the Wilsons for two days until the Wilson's car broke down. The Joad's are at a camp and Pa is asking around for work. He has a flier and he knows that there is work out west, but the man says that he starved his family to death trying to find work. Within all of this, Noah, Tom's oldest brother decided that he wants to live his life differently, so when the family is by a river, he leaves his family. The Joad family hears about the government camps. The government camps are camps that cost a dollar a week. In the camp, there is runnign water, toliets, bath tubs, and dances every Saturday night. They can work for their pay to stay. The Joad's are not used to this. The take showers everyday. Pa complains that he thinks he smells more because he is cleaner. The Joads love the camp, they are welcomed to the camp, the people are nice, and there is no cops allowed. Soon the Joads run out of money and are forced to leave the camp to get money for food. They heard about work forty miles away and they are heading there. Before this, Connie ran away to study and he left his wife and he unborn child behind. Granma also died. I think she died from all the stress of losing her husband and moving across the country. The family reculantly leaves the camp and goes south to find work and to get food.
The Grapes of Wrath #1
In the very begigning of the book, there is a big dust storm. There is dust everywhere and it is hard for the people to breathe. The women look to the men to be sure everything will be alright. The novel The Grapes of Wrath is about a family traveling east to west in search of a new life in California. The story starts out with one of the Joad family members just getting out of jail and hitch hiking his way home. This guys name is Tom Joad. He was in jail for killing a guy that put a knife on him. On the way home, he meets with the old precher and the precher wants to visit the Joad family. Once they get to the Joad farm, Tom surprises his mother and family. His family tells him that they are going west because the bank has took their land. The banks took the land because they could not harvest the crops fast enough and they could not afford a tractor. They are worried that there will not be the things in California that were promised to them. They believe that everything will work because they saw a pamphlet asking for work. The family loads up a car and heads down the road to California. The family leaves with 150 dollars. There is thirteen people on the ride to California. There is Granpa, Granma, Pa, Ma, Uncle John, Tom, Casy (the precher), Noah, Al, Rose of Sharon, Connie, Winfield, and Ruthie. They must ride on top of the car for all of them to fit. Rose of Sharon is pregnant and Connie is the father. During the ride the family is scared the car will break down. They must listen to the engine to be sure it is ok. Al, Tom's younger brother fixes the car when it breaks down. At the end of the day, the family stays at a roadside camp and they met another family and they ate.

The Old Man and the Sea #10
My personal opinion of the novel The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway is that I did not see the point in the novel. It was inspiring and discouraging. It is inspiring because the Old Man never gives up. He keeps trying. He fishes for his life and he knows nothing else. This makes it inspiring because he loves what he does and he trusts the system enough that he knows that he will not go hungry and will always have somewhere to call home. It is very discouraging because he can not catch a fish. I would think that with a man of his knowledge and skill, he would be able to catch a fish. In the book, it said that the longest he has gone without a fish was eighty seven days. That is a long time to go without a fish and it is disheartening to realize that the other fishermen are able to catch fish while a man with his skill can not catch a thing. I do like that is on the sea and he likes his job. This made it a little bit easier to read. Once he is on the sea it gets really boring. An exciting part is when he catches the fish and I think that it is going to get interesting, but it does not. When the Old Man gets cut and when he sees the fish, it seems like Ernest is trying to make the story interesting. It did interest me when we go to read what the fish looked like and the way the Old Man loved the fish. That part made sense to me because the Old Man realizes that its the circle of life and he needs the fish. Once he caught the fish, I did not think that the book could get much more boring. It did not to my surprise. The funny part was when the sharks came up to eat the fish. To me there was no point in the story. I got nothing out of it because he ended up where he started and it made no sense to me.
The Old Man and the Sea #9
Everybody has different motives in their lives. Some are motivated by loves, some by power, some by helping others, and many more. The Old Man, Santiago, in the novel The Old Man and the Sea is motivated by many things also. He is motivated by the lose of his wife. He is motivated by that because even though she is not with him anymore and he wants to make her proud, even with her death. Another motive he has is to be a good fisherman. He knows that he is a good fisherman and an educated one, but he needs to catch fish to prove himself lucky and to show the younger fishermen they are wrong about him. The Old Man has gone eighty four days without catching a fish and the younger fishermen are doubting that he is a good fisherman. Santiago is a great fisherman because he has been fishing his whole life and knows almost everything. The boy, who helps Santiago is motived to help him. The boy knows that the Old Man has it hard and he just wants to help him. Though after forty days of the Old Man not catching anything, the boy is forced by his family to leave Santiago. The boy still helps the Old Man when he comes in at night to help him clean up and prepare for the next day.
The Old Man plans to go fish out where none of the fishermen fish. His motive behind that is because he knows that is where the big fish are and he is going to catch one. I think this is a good motive because sometimes you need to take risks to get what you want and what you need. By being motivated to catch a big fish, he does catch a big fish. He catches a marlin. The Old Man is now motivated to kill the fish. With this motivation, he is patient and lets the fish do what it needs to do. Santiago just waits for the fish. Once he kills the fish, being motivated now by hunger, loneliness, and wanting to be home, he ties the fish to the side of the boat.
The sharks are picking at the fish. The sharks are motivated by what all things trying to survive are motivated by, hunger. The hunger of the sharks defeat the Old Man. Santiago is now motivated by little. He has no fish or anything left. He just goes back to the docks and is motivated by nothing.
The Old Man and the Sea #8
In Ernest Hemingway's short novel, The Old Man and the Sea, he uses some good imagery. The first good part of imagery that Hemingway uses is the image on the Old Man, Santiago. Santiago is described as an old man who has been fishing for most of his life. With this, it means that he has scarred hands, a deep tan, spots on his skin from being in the sun, which is skin cancer, he is small with a lot of muscle, and his eyes. Ernest described his eyes as "cheerful and undefeated." This is a good source of imagery because this shows that the Old Man is young at heart and he will not be beat.
Imagery is also in the boy. The boy stands for the promise of friendship and loyalty. This imagery is needed because without it, Santiago probably would not be able to live with himself because he would always be lonely. This forms the picture of a man living trough a boy to be young and to be able to do the things that he use to be able to do when he was young.
The image of the sea is a peaceful thing. Though the sea can be rough at times, it can also be calm and welcoming. I think this is what brings the Old Man back to the sea to fish so much.
Then there is the image of the marlin fish. This is a huge, beautiful fish that the Old Man has caught. He went out far away from the other fishermen to catch this big fish and he did. How Ernest describes the fish and how the Old Man sees the fish is both wonderful. Hemingway states that the fish is beautiful and majestic. THe fish to the Old Man is a source of new food and money. The Old Man loves the fish like a brother and knows that this beautiful fish can help him change his life. The image of the sharks eating the fish is sad. The sharks eating the fish slowly and little by little is daunting to the readers. We know that Santiago can not do a thing about it and it hurts to read that the marlin is being eaten.
Ernest did a great job with the imagery in this novel and he described the things well.
The Old Man and the Sea #7
In the novel The Old Man and the Sea, there is a lot of different tones. One of the main tones that I saw was hope. The Old Man, whose name is Santiago, he is very hopeful that he will catch a big fish and have luck. He has been a fisherman for a very long time and he knows that to be a great fisherman you need to be patient and you need to have luck. The Old Man has been eighty four days without luck. He told himself that no fisherman can go eighty five days without luck. He knows that he will get lucky the next day that he goes out to fish. This sets a hopeful tone for the book by showing that though Santigo is old and has little to no help, he is still hopeful. The next day that he goes out to sea he has an extremely optimistic view on how his day will go. He is hopeful that he will catch a big fish and his unlucky streak will be gone. While he is on the sea, he gets even more hopeful when he catches a huge marlin fish. The Old Man does not know at the time the big fish that he has. When Santiago sees the masterpiece he caught he becomes even more hopeful.
The hopeful tone of the book starts to dwindle as The Old Man is traveling in the sea with the marlin fish. The marlin fish travels three days dragging Santiago and the boat. The Old Man cuts his hand while the fish was jumping out of the water. The tone starts to change to discouragement. The hopeful tone comes back really fast when Santiago kills the fish and gets the fish tied to the boat. Then once the fish is tied to the boat and they are one their way home, the sharks start to attack the marlin. Santiago tries to fight off the sharks, but he can not. The sharks slowly eat away at the marlin. The tone of the novel changes dramatically at this point. The tone is now overpower. Santiago feels over powered and he gives up. He goes back to his shack and he falls asleep and he does not want to do anything because he is an unlucky fisherman.
the Old Man and the Sea #5
In Ernest Hemingway's short novel, The Old Man and the Sea, and old man, Santiago, is a lonely old man. There has been many hardships in his life. His wife died on him. It would be hard to live without the love of a wife. He has been an unlucky fishermen for eighty four days. He is going out for his last day because he said that he could not go eighty five days without catching a fish. There is a boy that helps Santiago out. Santiago has taught him everything that the boy knows about fishing. The boy feels bad about leaving the Old Man because his family made him. He wants to be able to help the Old Man but the Old Man will not allow him to. The boy tries to help Santiago as much as he can. He brings the Old Man food, beer, and helps his to prepare his boat for the next day out. The boy loves the Old Man and he wants not to be lonely. The Old Man goes out to sea the next day by himself. I do not think that is it a good idea to go out to sea by yourself to catch fish. There is a lot of problems that can go wrong and it is helpful to have help when that happens. For example, when the fish jumps out of the water, the rope that is connected to the fish cuts the Old Man's hand. The Old Man's hand is bleeding and its strarts to cramp and turn to a claw. The Old Man is right handed and his right hand was the cut hand. It would have been very helpful to have the boy by his side to help him catch the fish. The Old Man wishes that he had the boy. This shows that he is very lonely, and he is finially coming to his senses that he is a lonley old man.
the Old Man and the Sea #4
The second part of The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway is a longer more drawn out part. The Old Man, Santiago, is on his last day to get luck. He told himself that no one can ever go eighty five days without luck. He has been eighty four days and has not caught a fish. The other fishermen have caught a lot of fish. One man caught three nice big fish in one week. The boy, who helps the Old Man, wants to help the Old Man. The Old Man will not let him go because he is on a lucky boat and he needs the money. Santiago decides to go out to sea by himself for one last try. He has his pole in the water and all of a sudden, he got a bite. He knew it was a big fish and he held on to it. He knew that he luck has changed and he caught a big fish. He followed the fish a whole day before he even had a look at it. When he did see the fish, it was a huge marlin. It was really pretty with a purple tint and it was HUGE!! He chose to hang with the fish longer knowing that the fish will not be able to eat so it will starve. He also knew that the fish would grow tired. The Old Man had little to eat and had no help what so ever. The fish jumped out of the water and the rope cuts the Old Man's hand. Santiago's hand is bleeding and is going numb. Once the fish starts to get tired and he dies, the Old Man catches it. He ties the big marlin fish to the side of the boat. Santiago and his new lucky fish start on their way home. While on the way home, the fish starts getting attacked by sharks. Santiago tries as hard as he can to keep the sharks away and he also kills some. The Old Man lost to all the sharks and the sharks ate the fish to the bones. Once the Old Man gets to the docks, he goes straight to his shack and sleeps. The boy comes and cares for him. The younger fishermen see the big fish that is caught and they feel sorry for the Old Man.
The Old Man and the Sea #3
The Old Man and the Sea is a very short novel by the great author Ernest. Hemingway. The story starts out with and old man, named Santiago, who has not caught a fish within eighty four days. He believes that he is just going through some rough times and he will soon have his luck back. The boy, who the Old Man taught every thing, helps Santiago fish. He was told by his family that he must go to another boat to fish. The boy wanted to come back to Santiago's boat because he felt bad for him. The Old Man would not let the boy back to his boat thought because he did not want the boy to disobey his family. The Old Man is tanned deep from always being outside, his body is worn down, but his eyes are as cheerful as a kids in a candy shop. Santiago was made fun of by the younger fishermen. They would come in with big fish, and many of them. The older fishermen, who knew Santiago, they would only pat him on the back and encourage him. The Old Man is out of luck. Since fishing is more about luck, he thinks he is out and he will soon get more. Though Santiago is a very smart fisherman, he has gone almost three months without a fish. His wife has also died. The Old Man misses his wife very much and he is lonely. The boy helps the Old Man with his loneliness, but he can not replace the women he loved. The Old Man believed that he can not go eighty five days without luck or catching a fish. On day eighty five, he gets ready to go out to sea. He is fishing in the Gulf Stream. The boy wants to go with the Old Man, but he will not allow it. The boy helps the Old Man get ready to go out to sea.
The Old Man and the Sea #2
The Old Man's name is Santiago. He seems like a very faithful man. As Ernest Hemingway describes him in the beginning of the book, he has strong muscles, even though he is old. The muscles just look worn because they are a little, but not a lot. Hemmingway also talks about the Old Man's eyes. He says that his eyes are a deep blue just like the water. I think this is a sign that he is meant to be a fisherman and a part of the water. I think the Old Man is faithful because even though he doesn't give up trying to catch fish. He knows that he is just not getting lucky, but his luck will come soon. Some of the younger fishermen joke about the old man. He ignores them. He knows that some day he will catch a big fish and he will have luck. The boy is very helpful to Santiago. He wants to help help even though he was told not to. The boy loves Santiago. Santiago taught the boy how to fish and mostly everything that the boy has learned about the sea. The boy does not want to see the Old Man go through his hard times, so the boy is willing to ignore his family and stay with Santiago. When the Old Man does catch his big fish, he stays with the fish until it dies. This shows the loyalty that the Old Man has to his career. He knows that his luck will come only if he holds onto the fish. He does not let go of the fish. He also loves the fish which shows passion for his job. He loves the fish like a brother. He knows that they have been through a lot together. He needs the fish to prove himself lucky and to gain the respect of the other fishermen. He is a very old and knowledgeable old man and he respects the sea.
The Old Man and the Sea #1
The short novel, the Old Man and the Sea was a very symbolic book. There was a lot of symbolism within the fish and the Old Man himself. The symbolism with the fish is more about the journey to catch the fish. I think it represents the journey of the Old Man's life. I think this because he has had a long and fulfilling life and he does not want it to end. So, the Old Man holds onto the fish because he fears that if he lets go, his life would end also. The Old Man said that he fells like the fish is his brother. The symbolism means that he feels at peace with the big fish and he feels sorry for it, just like he feels sorry for himself. The fish getting eaten by the sharks is the Old Man getting beat by the younger and better fishermen. The Old Man has had a long and big life and he used to be a great fisherman. He still is a good fisherman, but his age and his body is betraying him. His body is betraying him because he does not have the same muscle that he used to and his body is just getting old. The symbolizes that his life is getting on its last limb. To the Old Man, the fish represented a new life. With the fish, he would have new luck and have more food and money. If he had more luck, he would be able to catch more fish, and with more fish, he would have more money. The fish and the Old Man formed a bond like brothers. Except the fish did not like the Old Man because the Old Man was trying to kill him. The fishes story stands for fighting for life. The big fish swam and swam to try and get the Old Man to let go. But the fish could not go any longer, and he gave up and died.

The Old Man and the Sea #6
In the novel The Old Man and the Sea I found a couple of themes. A little theme that I found was that you should cherish the people that surround you. The Old Man, Santiago, does not do this enough. He has a loyal boy who wants to help him and the boy wants to fish with the Old Man, but the Old Man will not allow him too. Yes, Santiago is appreciative of what the boy is trying to do, but he thinks that he can do it on his own. The Old Man is an old man and he can not do the things that he used to do by himself, and he needs the help of the boy. Santiago should support the boy more with his decisions.
The universal theme that I found was the journey of life and letting go. I figured this because the Old Man thinks that he will catch a big fish and his life will go back to normal and catch more fish than he has been catching, none. The Old Man journeys out to see by himself. I think Ernest Hemingway did this to show that Santiago with his old age is lonely. On the journey he catches a big fish. The Old Man realizes that this is his chance to have someone and he needs this fish. He needs the fish to become a lucky fisherman and the prove himself a good fisherman. On the journey with the fish, there is some rough patches and some good things. The rough things are when the fish trashes and jumps out of the water. This brings pain to Santiago. A happy moment is when he sees the fish for the first time and realizes how pretty it is. To Santiago holding on to this fish means holding on to life. Even though he should let go and live in peace, he wants to have the challenges that old age and not enough support has to offer. When Santiago comes to his senses that he can not have his fish, it is like when he realized that he is going to live an old persons life.
