The Grapes of Wrath #3
The ending of The Grapes of Wrath is disturbing. After the family leaves the government camp, they head toward a place where they heard that a lot of people were needed. This job was picking peaches. The family got five cents per bucket of peaches. The family was starving and the earned one dollar in that day. Ma bought meat and bread and not a lot of things for the family. They were in this camp that was for the workers. Earlier in the book, Tom got in a fight with a cop, and since he was on parole, Casy toke the blame and was takin to jail. Outside the camp there was a strike goin one. Tom went out to see what the fuss was and he saw Casy there. Casy got out of jail and was working at the planitiation. He was leading the strike because they were getting paid two and a half cents. The cops came and Tom got into another brawl with the cops and he thought that he killed another man. His face was messed up so he could not work in the field. His Ma decided that they should leave and go to another place. They went to a cotton field. Ruthie, Tom's younger sister, had a Cracker Jack and she wouldn't share it with the other kids and she told the other girl that her brother killed two guys before and he will kill her brother also. Ma found out and she made Tom leave. Meanwhile, Ruth of Sharon is getting ready to have her baby. She goes through labor and she has a stillborn. Ruth of Sharon is sleeping while Uncle John sends the baby off into the river. It rains for six days and the family goes into a barn to get dry. In the barn, there is a father and a son there. The father has not eaten for six days because he gave all his food to his son. Ruth of Sharon helps the dying man by brestfeeding him with her left over milk. Then the book ends with that. It was weird.
