The Grapes of Wrath #1
In the very begigning of the book, there is a big dust storm. There is dust everywhere and it is hard for the people to breathe. The women look to the men to be sure everything will be alright. The novel The Grapes of Wrath is about a family traveling east to west in search of a new life in California. The story starts out with one of the Joad family members just getting out of jail and hitch hiking his way home. This guys name is Tom Joad. He was in jail for killing a guy that put a knife on him. On the way home, he meets with the old precher and the precher wants to visit the Joad family. Once they get to the Joad farm, Tom surprises his mother and family. His family tells him that they are going west because the bank has took their land. The banks took the land because they could not harvest the crops fast enough and they could not afford a tractor.They are worried that there will not be the things in California that were promised to them. They believe that everything will work because they saw a pamphlet asking for work. The family loads up a car and heads down the road to California. The family leaves with 150 dollars. There is thirteen people on the ride to California. There is Granpa, Granma, Pa, Ma, Uncle John, Tom, Casy (the precher), Noah, Al, Rose of Sharon, Connie, Winfield, and Ruthie. They must ride on top of the car for all of them to fit. Rose of Sharon is pregnant and Connie is the father. During the ride the family is scared the car will break down. They must listen to the engine to be sure it is ok. Al, Tom's younger brother fixes the car when it breaks down. At the end of the day, the family stays at a roadside camp and they met another family and they ate.
