Fahrenheit 451 #4
Guy Montag is a firefighter. He is a firefighter who sets fires instead of extinguishing them. He does this because it is illegal to read books and he does not realize what is happening to the world because no one can read. Guy in the beginning of novel loves his job. He loves the smell of kerosene on him and he likes the feeling of helping out. On his way home one day, he meets his neighbor, Clairsse. She is a crazy little girl. She questions Montag's happiness. He tells her he is happy. Once he gets home, he realizes that he is not. To prove he is not happy he walks into his wife's bedroom and he sees that she has overdosed on drugs to try to kill her self. One day he is putting on a fire at an old ladies home and he steals one of the books. He went home and he was looking through the book. This shows that he is curios to know what is so bad with books that people are not allowed to read them. He is trying to read it, but he can not understand what the novel means. He calls a professor, Faber, to help explain. Once Guy knows what he is reading, he is anxious to show it off. When Mildred has friends over, he reads them poetry. This is a stupid thing to do. Faber know it is, but Montag ignores the warnings and keeps reading. I think he is trying to make the people realize that books are magical and they should not be destroyed. He also thinks that since he is a firefighter, he deserves to be listened to. He uses this, but no one listens or trusts him. Guy Montag is a very interesting man. At the beginning of the novel he loves his job. As the book goes on he realizes the power and the hope he is ruining from ridding the books. He is going to try to change this at the end of the book.
