Fahrenheit 451 #6
In the novel Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury, there is a lot of symbolism. There is symbolism on the first page. The symbol of the permanent smell of kerosene on Guy Montag symbols that he is scarred from lighting and destroying so many books and lives. Another symbol is the number 451 on Guy's helmet. This shows that he is reminded when ever he works what he purpose of the job is to do and to make sure it is done right. Death is a big symbol in the book. It is because there is a lot of death and suicide. In the beginning of the novel Mildred, Guy Montag's wife was trying to kill herself. Death symbols the end of an era. Reading and enjoying books was something that was done for so long, it will not suddenly leave. The firefighters, the cops, and the government it trying to get rid of it and it is also killing the people by it. Another symbol was Mildred. Mildred stood for the unhappiness in Guy Montag's life. Guy could be happy and he acts happy, but he is not. Mildred is the main reason for his unhappiness. Clairsse stands for hope. She does because while Guy is being forced to destroy books and he loves its, Clairsse makes him start to realize that he is doing the wrong thing and there is a way to do right. The burning lady is also a symbol. She symbols the love of the books. She does because she loves the books so much she died for them. Fire is a big part of the book. Fire symbols the end. Fire is used to burn down house and books. Burning down houses leaves families no where to go. At this time, houses were fireproof, but the houses that were burnt down were left to nothing but ash. As for books burning. It means the end of civilization. It does because all of the records are lost. The Constitution was burnt. This means that people are becoming so lazy they cannot even read it and they want it gone. This a deep symbolic book.
